Hey Supple Ones,
Today’s episode deals with the flexion and external rotation of your hip (think squatting). If you are also able to use the band on the high hip, you’ll end up having a pretty comprehensive little hip opener that deals with the joint capsule, the musculature of the hip, and the soft tissues that support those positions. You make your living off of your hips, so make sure to spend enough time to actually get some change.
Test/Retest; Squat

Is there a progression for this? This is my achilles heel, no pun intended. I am long in the torso, short legs, it is difficult to get my foot on the box and keep, or even get into the knee down position(regardless of the box height), my upper torso deviates(leans) toward the hip I am elevating. If it is just a matter of pushing the knee down and applying the tension band to my upper torso to upright my torso I will do it, I can take the discomfort, Please advise, new squat record by Donni Thompson 1200+
Anybody else have the same experience?
Thanks, Dennis Hegge
Dennis, this also represents a gaping hole in my mobility. I would love to hear about more corrections/cues for those who suck at this movement. For me, I find that if I am particularly stiff, doing this stretch on a bed or couch helps to my leg/knee to get support. I try to block the knee by pushing it down with my hand. If my foot off the surface I’ll try grabbing my foot with my other hand to get more stretch. Sometimes if my foot and butt are on the surface but my knee is off, it’s no problem, especially if I am stretching belly button to foot. Other times when all three are on I feel a gapping force in the knee (but no pain)…probably not good. I don’t know, just play around with it.
I will say that I was obsessing over this ROM just last night and am glad to see this post. The “butt back” cue is working wonders. Thanks a lot Kelly.
p.s. I ran across these barefoot shoes:

Look pretty cheap – in the $30 to $60 range. They have some sort of sport version due out in summer. Do you have any thoughts?
Surpirsingly well-written and informative for a free online article.
p.p.s. sorry about the typos
