Hey Well Watered Leopards,

Today I got an email from an overseas leopard in a dusty environment and had a phone call from a friend telling me about the pitting edema she witnessed in an athlete mobilizing with a band. And well, it made me realize that we needed to have a frank talk about getting a little more serious about our own personal hydration biology.

Check out crossfitendurance.com for more ideas about water/salts. In the meantime, start tracking your water. You can’t change what you don’t measure. See if you can’t make your tissues feel less stiff this week by upping/monitoring your water/electrolyte intake.

Oh and 5 min a cheek with the pain ball. Soft tissues mobs all week AND water. Post experiences to comments.

Tip of the day - I try to watch the mwod while getting in some time at the bottom of a squat. Today I got in 5+ minutes that I otherwise would have been sitting down for. On the shorter ones I can make it the whole time, today I had to unhinge once.

The video said you should not be losing more than a lb overnight…sometimes I lose 1.5-2 lbs overnight. .. .should I be concerned???? And if so, what should I do?

Awesome to see you spreading this message, Kelly. I have noticed a huge change by adding salts back into my diet (usually through electrolyte tabs). An odd thing I also noticed was that by increasing my salt intake, my appetite decreased: guess I was craving salt.

One thing to watch out for on the electrolyte mix is that certain electrolyte tabs/powders (including NUUN, which is delicious by the way), contain compounds containing sodium BENZOATE and citric acid. Sodium benzoate is used as a preservative and citric acid is usually a vitamin C additive. These two ingredients can combine in your system to form benzene, a carcinogen. Just something to watch out for. Hammer electrolyte tabs are personally my new go-to after learning that one…

As always, very informative. But I do have one question. Is iodine salt effective? I ask because that is all we have at work.

Haven’t weighed myself pre/post workout but I do almost every night and morning. Last night I started at 193 and this morning I was 189. I’d say average is 3 pound loss. I thought that was normal. Guess I need to add some electrolytes. Currently I just chug water all day at work.

I’m an overnight camper and operate with a search and rescue team - I’ve read about and have experienced significant dehydration after excessive daily exertion when sleeping. I’ve read studies of sleeping bags weighing 2 to 4 pounds more by morning simply by perspiring throughout the night. A lot of H2O needing to be replaced.

I am training for an upcoming Half Ironman Triathlon in September 2011. My problem is I am experiencing SEVERE leg craps while riding the bike for 50+ miles. To the point where they lock down totally. From just above each knee and through the knee. Neither leg will bend and I have those very painful legs cramps in the process. During a recent ride, I took on some Gatorade (half&half) and noticed I stopped sweating immediately. I’m looking over your information and just need to know the better supplements (not Gatorade) to go along with my water intake. I take “Tabolyte” pills before during and after each long ride, and still feel light affects of cramps. Also take in Sport Beans along the way. Maybe I’m combining too many different items and need to stick with one or two proven items. Thank you for any insight,
    Rick

Holy crap! Just did a workout and lost 2.5 lbs. I picked up some GU Brew. From TWO. Pretty cheap, $18 for 35 servings of 250 mg of sodium and 40 mg potassium. Only 8 gram sugar.

Dumb question: I thought sodium is bad for blood pressure. So why is it important to supplement with sodium?

@Kyle You body uses sodium to create gradients to bring things in and out of tissues. It is needed in things like cell volume control using sodium/potassium pumps

  14. Legit stuff. Thanks Kelley.
After the Mob cert my wife and I started on NUUN, as per your suggestion. I’ve also started to incorporate some more salt in my cooking - I was pissing like every hour. Need to weight and measure myself pre/post WOD that’s for sure. Very cool and interesting stuff. You never cease to amaze!
