Hey Mwodies,
Today’s mission is a love letter to good old fashioned tinkering. You see, when we teach the Movement and Mobility (M2) program to coaches and athletes, we try impress upon them not to memorize techniques, but rather understand the foundational concepts so that they can invent any technique to fit any problem. To this end, check out the horrible way that Coach Roop has made our simple anterior hip opener even better. Keep messing around. We can solve any problem.
Mission: Spend 5 min per leg opening up the front of your hip.
Test/Retest: Air squat. What happened to your ability to keep your knees out at the bottom? Do short quads/ant hip lead to valgus faults at the bottom of the squat (Knees in)? Could this be a reason why people turn their feet out during squatting?

The super couch just got worse.
LMFAO…Great stuff, especially in the beginning when those innocent bystanders almost got ran over by a runaway barbell!
haha. All i got was near death. So much good info everyday
wow. I can’t even do couch. I have major hip issues (but only on my left side?!). But! I think this opening of the capsule might be the missing link? can’t wait to try this. This site is a gift. Thank you.
before you try to couch, do a standing quad stretch to get those quads going. then make sure to get that femurs in the back of the hip capsule. then do the squat test for a few minutes. once you do these things you should be able to couch. if you can after mobilizing your hip socket and stretching ur quads then might wanna seek some help, maybe a chiropractor or PT. when i just started couching I had trouble just getting my opposite leg up, so thats how i got started. There is also a psoas stretch in the early videos that can help with the couch stretch position.
How do you wrap the band around your foot and hip? I’ve tried a few times to no avail?
I knelt on the ground and wrapped once (green band), held the overlap spot with the opposite hand and then rocked back to lift up the knee and get a second and third wrap, stretching the band for each wrap. It was a bit awkward, but worked out in the end. For the second band on the hip, hop close to the cage and kneel inside the loop. Pull it up into position and then push up with the hands to lift off the knee and move back.
@erin: you can scale it back. one foot forward, one foot back, sit down on a box or something on the butt cheek of the forward leg. Once good at that, go to a Sampson stretch, then couch stretch. Good luck!
